Aspiring writer wins junior journalist competition

A budding young blogger has been crowned the winner of the Royal Town’s junior journalist competition, Sutton Coldfield Town Centre BID has announced.

Nine-year-old Evie Anderson from Sutton Coldfield was named the newest contributor to Sutton Coldfield’s What’s On website after wowing judges with her creative writing skills last month.

The competition called on aspiring writers throughout the area to showcase their talents and shout about their town on the new online hub, which was launched by Sutton Coldfield Town Centre BID and Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Council in July.

Evie Anderson has been crowned the winner of Sutton Coldfield’s junior journalist competition

Evie, who was awarded a £50 voucher and tasked with penning a short piece documenting her adventures in the Royal Town, chose to visit Empire Cinema for her first blog.

There she enjoyed the latest blockbuster movie, 100% Wolf, with her brother Josh, Mum and Dad, while tucking into a selection of film-favourite snacks.

The cinema, which reopened on 26th August 2020, is now welcoming guests for socially distanced screenings in a Covid-secure environment.

As well as asking guests to wear face coverings and distancing seating, the theatre has also installed premium air-conditioning which fully exchanges the air in the room every seven minutes.

On winning the competition, Evie said:

I was so excited to be named the winner of the junior journalist competition! I love writing and there is so much to see and do in Sutton, so it’s great to be able to write about it. Our visit to the cinema was a fantastic family day out – the cinema was spotless, there was a really warm atmosphere and the film was very funny. I’m looking forward to writing about my next adventure already!”

Mike Bushell, Sutton Coldfield Town Centre BID Manager, added:

We were incredibly impressed by Evie’s competition entry – she is clearly a very talented aspiring writer even at her young age. The competition aims to give young budding bloggers a platform to showcase their skills as well as shine a light on the wide offering we have here in Sutton Coldfield.

In addition to Evie’s regular blog posts, we will be continually updating the site with new information to increase awareness of the town’s offering to encourage local residents and visitors to discover something new as we return to the ‘new normal’. Be sure to head to the website to check out Evie’s review.”

Created for residents and visitors of Sutton Coldfield, the new What’s On website amalgamates the best of what the town has to offer, focusing on a calendar of events showcasing what there is to look forward to both on and offline.

As well as a regular blog, this new digital guide for Sutton Coldfield features all of the upcoming events and special offers specific to shops and businesses in the Royal Town.
