Bat Out Of Hell at The Alexandra: Review

⭐⭐⭐⭐A great night out.

Directed by Jay Scheib By Jim Steinman

Strat is a fairly unwilling leader of the Lost; they live underground in the big city. Whilst high above Raven lives with her parents, her mother, Sloane, drinks and her father, Falco, is an angry businessman.

With Peter Pan woven throughout the themes of this production, Bat Out of Hell is a huge show, running for nearly two and a half hours including interval. There is an onstage band peppered around the rear of the stage. The set itself, is split into a tunnel with a bridge, a bedroom in the highrise tower, and a larger flat space at the front for huge dance numbers.

Lyrically, everything flows very smoothly apart from Objects in the Rear View Mirror which seems randomly shoehorned in. It’s All Coming Back To Me, Bat Out Of Hell, I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That) stand out on their own two feet as songs. Though sometimes it feels like there could be more of a break between songs to shove more moments of plot in.

Sharon Sexton as Sloane, Rob Fowler as Falco and our lead Glenn Adamson as Strat are as fresh and fun returning to their roles as they were in 2022, plus Katie Tonkinson is exciting and energetic as Raven. Their parings are electric!

The audience were enchanted throughout this production and sat mostly engrossed around me. This is a much-loved musical from a much-loved album and it really shows.

I had a great night out watching this Meat Loaf musical and I’m sure you will too. Bat Out of Hell is at The Alexandra until 22nd February 2025. Book tickets here: atgtickets.com/shows/bat-out-of-hell/the-alexandra-theatre-birmingham.
