BMOS We Will Rock You at The Alexandra: Review

⭐⭐⭐⭐Totally Rocking Brum!

Directed by Aaron Gibson, music and lyrics by Queen, story and script by Ben Elton

Set three hundred years in the future, Galileo Figaro (Dan Smith) and Scaramouche (Charlotte Jervis) find themselves on a quest to discover what music and rock really are. On the way, they clash with Killer Queen (Fiona Farnsworth) and Khashoggi (Robbie Love) and make friends with Brit (Gavin Whichello) and Oz (Heaven Okah).

This local production of We Will Rock You by BMOS really leans into its themes of community, standing out in the crowd and being yourself. It highlights the local talent in the Birmingham community and beyond, from music, costumes, staging and lighting.

Playing into the themes of AI taking over the digital backdrops, using AI locations, there are plenty of practical effects too, neon doorways, an industrial cage and a high-level hiding the band throughout the show.

At two hours and fifty minutes including interval this is a lengthy production but there are a lot of songs to jam into the mix. I particularly loved Under Pressure, No-one But You (Only The Good Die Young) and Who Wants To Live Forever.

Dan Smith and Charlotte Jervis are excellent as our leads, quirky, fun and powerful voices. Heaven Okah also shows her voice off so well as Oz. There is scene-stealing all over the place, but it is all done with cheeky fun.

The audience loved this production, and it is really easy to see how the songs resonate. There’s even a chance at the end to film the cast for the encore.

Totally Rocking Brum! We Will Rock You is at The Alexandra until 14th June 2026. Book tickets here: atgtickets.com/shows/bmos-presents-we-will-rock-you/the-alexandra-theatre-birmingham.
