Calamity Jane at Birmingham Hippodrome: Review

⭐⭐⭐⭐”A warm, fun musical”

Directed by Nikolai Foster, adapted by Charles K Freeman, from a screenplay by James O’Hanlon, music by Sammy Fain, and lyrics by Paul Francis Webster

Howdy folks! I’ve got all the details of a sweet sure-fire hit musical to impart with you, Calamity Jane has left her horse tied up outside Birmingham Hippodrome this week and is ready to give a genuine live performance of her great musical.

The whole wide world must know the legend of Calamity Jane (played by the very talented Carrie Hope Fletcher) and Wild Bill Hickock (the smooth singing Vinnie Coyle). After searching for a famous singer, Calamity brings back Katie Brown (Seren Sandham-Davies) to Deadwood by mistake. Enraging the community, Katie also catches the eye of Calmity’s crush, Danny Gilmartin (played by Luke Wilson). Can everyone realise who they really love. Or will there be a high noon gun fight?

This is a warm, fun ensemble musical lead solidly by Carrie Hope Fletcher. The excellent onstage band make up the community of Deadwood. Samuel Holmes steals all of the scenes he is in as the chaotic Francis Fryer. The whole on-stage company is excellent.

The static set forms many locations from a bar, to a house and then the open road. There are stunning costumes plus some more fun ones, including a Queen Victoria frock and a very muddy dress.

The audience loved being able to sing-along to The Black Hills of Dakota and they also loved The Deadwood Stage (Whip-Crack-Away!) plus songs not featured in the film.

Calamity Jane is at Birmingham Hippodrome until 22nd March 2025. Book tickets here: birminghamhippodrome.com/calendar/calamity-jane.
