Back in the early days and late nights of the internet, when dial-up cost a penny a minute via Freeserve: there once was a fun and offbeat website called: Birmingham It’s Not Shit.. with animation and music replacing the printed word. They say that everything is circular like the 11C and the 8A, so the team behind that Flash website have produced their very own book. Being proper Brummies means its actually their second book..

Birmingham It’s Not Shit
50 Things that Delight about Brum
4th May 2021: Infamous Brum-boosting website Birmingham: It’s Not Shit turns 18 years-old this week and, to celebrate, the team behind it are promising to tell us just why the second city is second to none: in a new book.
Called Birmingham: It’s Not Shit: 50 Things That Delight About Brum the book will first be available to those that back it on crowdfunding website Kickstarter.
Authors Jon Bounds, Jon Hickman and Danny Smith promise the book will reveal 50 of the biggest things, places, people and feelings that delight them about Brum. They say that now Birmingham: It’s Not Shit has reached 18, people should ‘buy us a pint’ and get the book published.
BiNS founder Jon Bounds, said:
We all know that Birmingham isn’t shit. We’ve spent nearly 20 years telling people, showing the world, and often undermining our case. We’re tired of falling back on the same old clichés, and resting on past achievements, so we’ve decided we must share the ineffable reasons why we say ‘Birmingham: it’s not shit’ and attempt to eff them.
Even though we changed our name to Paradise Circus we’ve never stopped telling the world ‘Birmingham isn’t shit’. We’ve even put on a sell out stage show and had a country and western chart number one record in our attempts to prove it. Now we’re looking to make it official in print and we’d love as many Brummies as possible to join us — one of the crowdfunding rewards is even for us to take them up the Ackers.”
Brummies can back the book, pre-order copies and other special rewards at kickstarter.com/projects/paradisecircus/birmingham-its-not-shit-the-book for 60 days.
Over the years the site has gained plaudits from the likes of advertising guru Trevor Beatie, Benjamin Zephaniah, and Adrian Chiles, while ex-Edgbaston MP Gisela Stuart once called for it to be banned.
Comedian Stewart Lee called Paradise Circus’s Birmingham
funny, profound, innovative, historic, and blessed with both a sense of its own absurdity, and a modest pride in its often unheralded achievements.”
In response, co-Editor Jon Hickman said:
See, we’re even the best at modesty… our first book 101 Things Birmingham Gave the World has sold thousands of copies and still rates 4 / 5 on Amazon.”
