Pizza @Pizza, Birmingham

@Pizza opened a few months ago in the Grand Central part of Bullring and Grand Central above Birmingham New Street Station. This is @Pizza’s second branch after the first opened in Edinburgh and I keep going back.

It’s known for its rectangular style long pizza which are cooked under a superfast toasting conveyor.

Tuesday 5.45pm

The duty manager recognises me from my 2nd or is it my 3rd visit? I’m showing my friend Becca the menu when he approaches with a warm smile, “Hey how are you, you’ve been here before, you don’t need the menu?” No incognito here for me then and he doesn’t know that I’m BrumHour.

He clears a table for us, (I’m sure this is a self tidy restaurant, if not it should be!) After all its fairly fast food. Becca starts to look at all the Pizza’s on the @Pizza menu, but I know I’ll be designing my own (hence why I didn’t need a menu!).

This is a modern fresh eatery with lots black and white and clean lines, there are four-person booths down one side, two long tables in the middle and two group booths by the door.

I’ve been to @Pizza three times now and the experience has been very consistent each time. The first time I was with my Dad as they were doing a pizza give away for test lunches and dinners for opening in February. My Dad loved his Pizza then and seemed unwilling to swap a slice with me (which he eventually did).

Then, I came on my own as I had an hour before the theatre, and again I picked the design your own pizza. It’s the quality of the food and the customer service that sets this space apart from others around central Birmingham.

I like to have, a sourdough base, a spicy tomato sauce base, scottish cheese, red and green peppers, baby tomatoes, mushroom and chicken.

All Pizza’s cost £9.99 and there’s a special lunch Pizza which is two main toppings and a finish. I can’t see when I’ll be doing that but it’s good to know.
