Experience review: TILT23 with RoguePlay Theatre
TILT UK Aerial and Physical Theatre returned this week for TILT23 and I was invited along to a pre-event experience via Mandy Rose at M Seven Public Relations and the above radio interview which I recorded with Kim Wildbourne.
As part of my interview invite, Birmingham-based features writer Diane Parkes was set for a practical experience of using the silks (the curtain like material which hangs from the rafters). After I’d photographed Diane’s spiderman like skills I was invited to have a go myself. I wasn’t that comfortable with being off the ground, but the idea of sitting in a hanging cocoon appealed to me greatly with lots of encouragement from Kim and Diane, I pushed to get into the correct position. It made me realise just how much strength and skill the experts like Kim have.
Tilt not only teaches new skills to people but also demonstrates international talent and this night was no exception. This year’s Pro Night (14th July 2023). featured Angeliki Nikolakaki demonstrating her talent on the hoop, and Felix Fogg performing on a Chinese pole which made me fearful every time he was high in the rafters holding on by one hand. Contortionist Rebecca Hannah was also performing in the first half to show her amazing flexibility!
Also in the first half, Kim Wildbourne performed with a narrative featuring nets and waste rubbish/garbage including single use plastic. It was a thoughtful yet sad piece that made me think of animals trapped by plastics in the oceans. During the second half, we were treated to Anastasia on the hoop, Company Apidae presenting a group work and Duran on the ropes.
It’s fantastic to see such great talent presented locally in this friendly, intimate space, the audience were thrilled to be there and enthusiastic throughout.
