The first-ever Redditch comedy club is gearing up to show the whole town how powerful laughter can be. Fat Theo’s Comedy Club in Matchborough will be opening its doors on Friday 12th August 2022, featuring stars from BBC’s Live At The Apollo and a whole host of comedians from the thriving comedy circuit.
The club is owned by Birmingham-born comedian Anthony Theophanous, also known as Fat Theo, who suffered a brain haemorrhage that left him unable to work and suffering with amnesia. As part of his rehabilitation, staff at Moor Green brain injury unit suggested he tried activities that would help him to rebuild pathways in his brain.
While searching, Anthony came across the Ultra Comedy course on social media. He said:
I’ve always been a huge comedy fan, before my brain injury my wife and I travelled throughout the country watching big-name stars such as Kevin Hart, Frankie Boyle, and Chris Rock.
I dreamt about being a comedian but my working life meant I was always too busy.”
The grand opening night line-up includes English Comedian of the Year, Rob Mulholland as well as Lindsey Santoro, finalist for English Comedian of the Year.
Live at the Apollo’s Scott Bennett is also on the guest list and those attending will get a free glass of bubbly to enjoy the comedy with. Friday and Saturday nights at the Comedy Club will be reserved for professional comedians. However, there will be opportunities for new and developing acts to get the chance to appear on stage.
Anthony has spent three years as an independent promoter, bringing shows to pubs and social clubs across the Midlands. He added:
I hope to create a place where people of Redditch and Worcestershire have access to professional comedy shows at reasonable prices. In my time as a promoter, I’ve made some amazing connections within the UK comedy circuit.
Redditch doesn’t have anything like what I’m intending, so potentially there’s a new great night out for everyone. My plans for the future are to establish it as a hub for the community of Redditch, to include live professional comedy, live music, open mic nights and organised events for families”.
Tickets for Fat Theo’s Comedy Club grand opening night sold out in record time. The club currently have a waiting list for comedy fans hoping to attend the evening.
The club’s second week is already selling well. Tickets and further information about forthcoming events at Fat Theo’s Comedy Club can be found here: jokepit.com/comedy-by/fat-theo-comedy.
