Kings Heath Poetry Slam Launches

The Kings Heath Business Improvement District (BID) are pleased to announce that they will be joining forces with Twisted Tongues, a Derby-based poetry collective that specialises in open mic events for spoken word artists, to bring the first ever Poetry Slam Competition to Kings Heath this Spring.

The Poetry Slam Competition will take place across various venues in Kings Heath and will see performers battle it out over several rounds to win cash prizes, with the overall winner being crowned in the live final this June.

Kings Heath Poetry Slam

Kings Heath BID is inviting hopeful participants to register their interest before 23rd April to compete in the first-ever Kings Heath Poetry Slam, which will begin with a live performance round in May.

Individual performers, poets, writers, rappers, MCs and spoken word artists of all abilities, from Birmingham and the surrounding areas, are invited to take part in the first live performance round by either registering interest to perform live or, submitting a live performance video via email to poetry@enjoykingsheath.com.

Participants are to perform, either live or recorded, an original piece, unaccompanied by music, and will be judged on presentation, writing and originality. Registration of interest to perform or video’s must be received no later than 5pm, Tuesday 23rd April 2019.

Town Centre Manager Martin Mullaney says;

We are really excited to host the first ever Kings Heath Poetry Slam, which will begin with a live performance round and will see just 28 competitors go on perform at the semi-finals. We then have the tricky job of deciding who will be the final 7 performers!

There are two prizes up for grabs with an Audience vote and a Judges vote, both winners will receive a £75 cash prize! We are looking forward to seeing all the entries and hope the event will offer our local community the opportunity to show off their talents! ”

Organisers will shortly announce the date and venue for the first heat, to which there is no entry fee to pay, however candidates must be 18 years old or over.

To register interest in performing or to share a performance video please email poetry@enjoykingsheath.com.
