Les Misérables – Let the People Sing at The Alexandra: Review

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐”Bold, loud and brash”

Directed by Stephen Duckham, music by Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyrics Herbert Kretzmer

Les Misérables is an epic musical covering years in the life of Jean Valjean – Prisoner 24601 and for many people it is the pinnacle of musical theatre. This is the first time this famous musical version has been produced as a local production.

Make no mistake this is a huge long musical with no spoken words throughout only sung, it features over fifty people on the stage in group moments. Les Misérables – Let the People Sing at The Alexandra is presented by BMOS Musical Theatre Company with Bilston Operatic Company, Bournville Musical Theatre Company and West Bromwich Operatic Society.

The set in the first half mainly consists of two large blocks of stairs with platforms, whilst the second half is the makeshift barricade with half doors and furniture building the height. Projection onto the rear of the stage is used throughout. Costumes are excellent too, full of huge dresses and Sunday-best suits. I noticed only one single element which added to the drama was missing from the touring version, the title card at the end of the prologue was not featured at this point.

At this press night performance we were treated to Wil Neale’s Jean Valjean, a man transforming from prisoner to slightly guilty free man and his adopted daughter Cosette (Ismay Dudzinski-Grubb), local police inspector Javert (Robbie Love) continues to hunt Valjean years after he broke his parole conditions.

Vocals are excellent throughout and the raw talent of the company adds to the community style of the story. This production doesn’t feature the heavy cockney accents of the regular UK tour and it benefits hugely as such. The story is bold, loud and brash and the performances match this so well.

A musical lovers dream, Les Miserables – Let The People Sing is at The Alexandra until 14th June. Book tickets here: atgtickets.com/shows/bmos-presents-les-miserables-let-the-people-sing/the-alexandra-theatre-birmingham.
