Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice
returns for 2019
Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice’s Let’s Danceathon is back for 2019, and will see hundreds of dance enthusiasts bust their best moves in support of the charity.
Taking place on Saturday 2nd November in Harborne, the Hospice is asking local people to strut their stuff for six continuous hours to help raise much-needed funds for its care.

Experts will lead participants through six different styles of dance, including Barn Dancing, Bollywood and Clubbercise – an energetic workout set to popular dance anthems.
There will also be an opportunity to learn Michael Jackson’s famous ‘Thriller’ routine – with dancers taken through a step-by-step lesson to perfect the popular ‘dance of the undead’.
The theme for this year’s Let’s Danceathon is all things 80s and dancers are encouraged to dress up in the decade’s best fashion, including neon colours, leg warmers and ra-ra skirts. Participants will also get to freestyle to 80s music at the end of the danceathon, giving them a chance to bust their favourite signature moves or refine the styles they’ve just learned.
Let’s Danceathon is organised by Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice and all funds raised will help provide expert care to local people living with life-limiting illness. The Hospice supports people to live well with their illness, right up to the end of life, as well as care for their families, loved ones and carers too.
Laura Nash, Events Manager at Birmingham St Mary’s, said:
Whether you’ve never danced before or are an experienced mover, Let’s Danceathon is a fantastic way to get active, experiment with new styles, and find a dance you love. With the theme being 80s this year, we’re expecting great music, lots of energy, bright clothes and big hair!
Whilst Let’s Danceathon is a lot of fun, it has a serious purpose of raising much-needed funds for the Hospice. This year, it will cost £9 million to run our services – over 64 per cent of which must come from generous voluntary donations. That’s why events like this are so crucial, as they enable us to continue to provide the best hospice care to people and their loved ones, wherever and whenever they need it.”
This is the fourth Let’s Danceathon that Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice has organised, with its previous event raising over £19k for the charity.
This year, Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice will be celebrating 40 years of care across Birmingham and Sandwell. When the Hospice first opened in 1979, it could care for 25 people on any given day. Four decades later and the Hospice is supporting over 400 people every day, providing care in people’s homes, in the community, at its Day Hospice facility and the Hospice’s Inpatient Unit.
Let’s Danceathon takes place from 3.30pm to 11.30pm at Lordswood Girls School in Harborne. Tickets cost £17.50 each or £14 per person when booked in a team of five. To find out more or to book, visit: birminghamhospice.org.uk/lets-danceathon-nov-2019
