Matilda The Musical at Birmingham Hippodrome: Review
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐”A magical production”
Directed by Marcus Warchus, Book by Dennis Kelly, Music and Lyrics by Tim Minchin
Set in the 1990s or thereabouts, Matilda (Played at this performance by Sanna Kurihara – one of four Matildas on this tour) appears to be the odd one out in her family and is sent to a new school by her parents (Rebecca Thornhill and Adam Stafford). She encounters the lovely Miss Honey (Tessa Kadler) and scary headmistress Miss Trunchball (Richard Hurst).

This is a magical production with plenty of fun moments for all the family; the cheeky references to parenthood and found family are all treated with the usual brash approach that only Roald Dahl’s writing can bring. You’ll be hard pushed to find a better family musical, and this one is so much fun.
The songs by Tim Minchin will echo in your head for days. Revolting Children, When I Grow Up, Naughty and Miracle all show how kids see the world and how we never really grow up. The sets are excellent, with plenty to look at even before the show has begun and words are formed by the letters hanging down.

Richard Hurst is suitably scary as Miss Trunchbull, with Sanna Kurihara owning the stage every second she is there. The audience loved this performance and really cheered at certain moments.
A magical production, Matilda The Musical is at Birmingham Hippodrome until 2nd August 2026. Book tickets here: birminghamhippodrome.com/calendar/matilda-the-musical.
