Midsomer Murders at The Alexandra: Review
⭐⭐⭐⭐”An entertaining mystery”
Written and Directed by Guy Unsworth
In the small, leafy village of Badger’s Drift, several murders take place, with the investigation being conducted by Barnaby (Daniel Casey) and Troy (James Bradwell).
This production adapts the first book in the series by Caroline Graham and is set in the late 1990s. Apart from the characters saying the year, it could really have been anytime from the 80s or 90s.

This is a gentle and quite light murder mystery which has some quite serious subjects lurking beneath the surface. The sets switch swiftly too, from the police station, to the gates of a manor, to the lounge of the local busybodies. Lighting and small models of the houses really lend to the “picture perfect” village style.

Daniel Casey and James Bradwell are confident as Barnaby and Troy, with the rest of the company of actors playing the other roles. Chandrika Chevli particularly shows off her skills at switching characters, as does John Dougall, with his portrayal of Iris standing out. If you don’t know the TV series, it won’t matter as the story is a jumping-on point in itself.
An entertaining mystery, Midsomer Murders is at The Alexandra until 14th March 2026. Book tickets here: atgtickets.com/shows/midsomer-murders-the-killings-at-badgers-drift/the-alexandra-theatre-birmingham.
