Review: 2:22 A Ghost Story at The Alexandra

⭐⭐⭐⭐”A charmingly spooky thriller”

Directed by Matthew Dunster and Isabel Marr written by Danny Robins

West End hit, 2:22 A Ghost Story has stopped by at The Alexandra. Often in the media for its star-studded castings, including the recent likes of Cheryl, Danny Robin’s thriller has succeeded in keeping its chilling story a secret to mainstream audiences, offering an unpredictable drama that grows in intensity.

Sam (George Rainsford) and Jenny (Fiona Wade) have moved into a large Victorian house in East London. Sam’s university friend Lauren (Vera Chok) comes round for dinner with her new man Ben (Jay McGuiness). Except Jenny is freaking out that their new house is haunted and in particular her child’s bedroom.

From its spooky soundscape to its realistic lounge, dining room/kitchen one-room set. 2:22 A Ghost Story invites everyone to see the evening unfold. It’s easy to see why this has been selling out across the tour. It is a fun thriller that doesn’t take itself too seriously even in its more dramatic moments. Though I could have done without the screaming during each time jump.

George Rainsford is great as the mostly angry, intellectual Sam whilst Fiona Wade is suitably manic and showing signs of being gaslit by almost everyone as his upset wife. Jay McGuiness‘ cockney sparrow accent might be a little jarring to some, but his fun friendly character actually shows the most depth and Vera Chok is easily the most suspicious of the four with her analytical mental health expert character both pointing the finger and being a chief suspect.

There isn’t much time when the reality of the story comes to pass for the audience to process the information and that means everyone is somewhat bewildered when leaving the theatre but all the same, I knew I’d seen an entertaining two-hour production. I won’t give any more spoilers than saying that.

A charmingly spooky thriller, 2:22 A Ghost Story is at The Alexandra until 20th January 2024. Discover what is coming up at The Alexandra here: atgtickets.com/venues/alexandra-theatre-birmingham. 2:22 A Ghost Story is currently on tour until June 2024. Find out more here: 222aghoststory.com.
