Review: Awful Auntie at The Alexandra

⭐⭐⭐⭐Perfect for small and big kids alike

Adapted and directed by Neal Foster

12-year-old Stella (Annie Cordoni) wakes in her bed in her family’s ancestral manor, she discovers her parents have died in a car accident that she somehow survived and her Auntie Alberta (Neal Foster) is now running the house as the Lady of the manor. Auntie is desperate for Stella to find the deeds of the house and sign them over to auntie herself.

Set over two hours, including interval, with the first part running at just over 45 minutes, Awful Auntie is aimed at junior school-aged children and probably their younger siblings. It is filled with jokes about poo and farting as well as a fun story about inheritance. Sounds of young glee filled the theatre throughout this performance.

Neal Foster is unhinged and shamelessly larger than life as Auntie herself and so much fun to watch. Annie Cordoni delivers fun performance throughout as our main character Stella with Matthew Allen fun and childlike as her spooky friend Soot.

The large rotating set is great to see and it makes you want to walk up to the stage and explore it for yourself. At times the music made me feel like they could burst into song at any moment.

Perfect for small and big kids alike, Awful Auntie is at The Alexandra until 19th October 2024. Book tickets here: atgtickets.com/shows/awful-auntie/the-alexandra-theatre-birmingham.
