Review: Birmingham Royal Ballet: The Nutcracker 2022 at Birmingham Hippodrome
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐A stunning production!
Choreography by Peter Wright, Lev Ivanov, Vincent Redmon, music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
It’s Christmas Eve: Clara (Karla Doorbar) and her family are hosting a gathering at their newly renovated home. Drosselmeyer, a magician (Rory Mackay) brings some close-up magic and performers to entertain the guests, along with gifts for some of the those attending. He gives Clara a wooden nutcracker, and after the others have left, Clara enters a magical fantasy world with a Prince (Mathias Dingman), The Sugar Plum Fairy (Momoko Hirata) and The Snow Fairy (Yijing Zhang).
2022 sees an upgraded production shown on the Birmingham Hippodrome stage for the first time, and every penny is visible. From a new canvas to the home of Clara’s family to costumes of the characters. The colours feel more vibrant than ever before.
This is the perfect introduction to ballet and theatre in general, it has very family friendly tones with fairly gentle themes. Plus there is a sense of empowerment and adventure. Is Clara’s story a dream? Or does a magician break into her house after performing a show there? The dream seems more logical to me but I could be wrong. It certainly made me feel like I’d arrived in a magical dream world.
Mathias Dingman and Momoko Hirata easily show their strength and confident ballet techniques. It looks so natural that it is easy to forget how much time and effort they put in nearly every single day to be at this level. The heart of tonight’s performance was Karla Doorbar who provides the innocent and surprised expressions of someone who hasn’t been performing this for several years. A special skill indeed.
This is a stunning production of an accomplished team, who throughout 2022 have demonstrated their versatility and skill. I enjoyed every second of it and so did the packed-out audience.
