Review: Derren Brown: Showman at The Alexandra
Prepare to be amazed! No… you need to prepare to be more amazed than that! Prepare to be really, really amazed!! Derren Brown is amazing audiences at The Alexandra all this week with his unique act involving magic, mystery and hypnosis.
Without giving away any of the show, you will gasp in amazement and find yourself gently whispering “WOW” as you look towards your theatre companion and just ask “How the f…?”.
Derren has a show so full of mysteries that truly boggle one’s mind. I found myself looking at something, thinking to myself “That is NOT possible” yet I had just seen it happen, so clearly it is possible.
With lots of audience participation and opportunities for anyone who wishes to join in, you can become as immersed as you want to. I did stand up at one point as Derren tried to hypnotise anyone who wanted to join in.
Sadly on this occasion, I found myself un-hypnotised but I did have fun trying, and I genuinely did want to experience what it felt like to be under hypnosis.
Obviously, some people will think everyone that takes part in the show is a stooge, but with audience members selected randomly thanks to Derren and his frisbees, I think it’s a certainty that what you see is absolutely genuine.
This really is a show like no other I have ever seen and I did love every moment. Derren is quite the showman, aptly so as this tour is entitled Showman and it will captivate you… if you are lucky enough to get tickets. Last night was sold out and rightly so.
So for now I’m going to scratch in my garden for some worms and crow at the rising sun whilst I contemplate why I wasn’t hypnotised. (Or was I?)
Derren Brown: Showman is at The Alexandra until 30th October. The UK Tour continues until at least 29th October 2022. See the tour dates here: derrenbrown.co.uk
