Review: Dreamgirls at The Alexandra
Directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, book and Lyrics by Tom Eyen, music by Henry Krieger
Nicole Raquel Dennis plays Effie White, an up-and-coming young singer with a huge voice who finds herself side-lined in favour of her fellow vocal group member Deena Jones played by Natalie Kassanga in this dramatic musical story filled with huge songs.
Set across the 60s and 70s this tale provides a snapshot of their lives and how they are interwoven by the men around them.
Originally scheduled for December 2020, Dreamgirls has finally arrived on The Alexandra’s stage as their final touring production of 2022 and it was well worth the wait. The vocals alone made it for me.
Nicole Raquel Dennis belts out And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going with raw emotion and power and it sent the audience wild! And the variations on One Night Only are excellent. Plus I loved I Am Changing and of course, Listen. Natalie Kassanga and Paige Peddie as Lorrell shine as the Dreamgirls easily switch from young slightly vulnerable teens to assured women, joined by Brianna Ogunbawo as Michelle.
The are some really lovely costumes and the ladies get dresses which sparkle across the whole theatre.
Whilst the set is pretty straightforward, all moving columns and huge backdrops, there are moments during some songs where their movement is distracting as it sets up for the next segment of the show. I appreciate they want to keep the story as tight and smooth as possible but I like to have moments to reflect and applaud songs rather than downplay moments.
This is a stunning show all about stepping out into the light, its confident and assured delivery is bound to enchant a new generation for decades to come.
Dreamgirls is at The Alexandra until 31st December 2022. Book tickets using BrumHour’s affiliate link >> HERE <<.
