Review: I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change at The Old Joint Stock

⭐⭐⭐⭐”A warm comedy musical filled with fun stories about relationships”

Directed by Karl Steele book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro music by Jimmy Roberts

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change is a series of musical situation comedic sketches connected through the theme of relationships and dating told over two one-hour acts. Featuring four strong performers, Megan Carole, Aidan Cutler, Sophie Kandola and Ollie Thomas-Smith playing a variety of couples at many different stages in relationships this production explores the themes of love, loss, sex and confidence.

The humour is broad and the music piano based, I felt like I’d fallen into Whose Line Is It Anyway? where the actors are assigned characters throughout the show, deliberately switching situations and personalities and even accents, pretty regularly. I found myself laughing throughout as each situation is revealed or observation is made.

The vocals are excellent and the cast blend their voices really well, their collective talent is obvious and the solos show off their vocal range confidently.

The set looks strongly like Joey from Friends in an Off Broadway production also from the 90s, filled with empty picture frames painted white and half lampshades almost buried into the walls. Unusually, two sets of seating face each other and the actors are switching direction throughout. This adds to the quirky situations as the cast frequently sits and interacts with the audiences on both sides.
