Review: I Screamed a Scream at The Old Joint Stock
⭐⭐⭐⭐”A deliciously evil night out”
Directed by Emily Susanne Lloyd
A cabaret-style production which features selected songs from both famous and niche musical theatre I Screamed a Scream is a a two-hour warm love letter to theatre villains and theatre villainy.
Our performers leaned in to their villains with ease, Sinead Kenny, Haydn Cox and Lydia Eliza Roberts each performing fun songs throughout, one of my favourites being Easy Street from Annie which saw the three guests perform as a group.
Our compare James Edge into performer from theatre manager with confident ease and his performance of You’ll Be Back from Hamilton was easily a stand-out to see. Other musicals featured included Wonderland, The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, The Lion King 2 (Who Knew??) and Hairspray. There was even time for an evil laugh competition.
Music was confidently provided by Callum Thompson on piano with additional vocals, and the staging was simple but effective, with four mics and a piano plus a red cloth and red candle holders.
I’d love to see more of this style of production, I’d expect to see something like this starting at 9pm on a Friday in other cities but this is Birmingham and most either go home at 5pm or start drinking so 7.30pm was perfect.
This small but ambitious production company have big goals and judging by this vibrant packed theatre it is paying off in buckets. Hopefully this will return for a part two in the future.
I Screamed a Scream is at The Old Joint Stock until 1st November 2024. Book tickets here and check out their forthcoming productions: oldjointstock.co.uk/whats-on.
