Review: Peter Pan Goes Wrong at The Alexandra
⭐⭐⭐⭐Total chaos – I loved it!
Directed Adam Meggio, written by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields
Our narrator Francis, (Jean-Luke Worrell) tries to lead us through a production of Peter Pan being put on once again by Cornley Drama Society. Sandra (Consuela Rolle – at this performance) is playing Wendy, who is seeing Jonathan (Gareth Tempest) who is playing Peter Pan but Max (Theo Toksvig-Stewart) has eyes for Wendy too but he’s been dumped in the role of the Crocodile as well as playing Wendy’s brother Michael. Confused.. you will be?
A brief introduction from Chris Bean (Jack Michael Stacey) who is playing both Hook and Mr Darling, hasn’t helped matters but the show must go on.

Back in the world of Cornley Drama Society, we learn more about the characters from The Play That Goes Wrong, hapless Max will still do anything for a laugh and Trevor (Jake Burgum) is still being roped into chaos on the stage when he’s meant to be helping out behind the scenes.
I’d seen a one-hour version of this show on BBC One a few years ago and felt rewarded by waiting for this to appear at The Alexandra, it suits the stage here particularly the rotating stage which takes us, the audience along on adventures.

At two hours and ten minutes including interval, this production doesn’t feel bulked out too much from the TV version and there’s a fun Disney-style undersea moment. In fact, this production is filled with fun moments. Consuela Rolle is on stage the most and is really there to handhold the audience throughout the chaos around her, and a fine job she does too. Jean-Luke Worrell is a total scene stealer and having seen him in Cluedo last year I can’t wait to see what he does next.
Total chaos – I loved it! Peter Pan Goes Wrong is at The Alexandra until 23rd March 2024. Book tickets here: atgtickets.com/shows/peter-pan-goes-wrong/the-alexandra-theatre-birmingham.
