Review: Sister Act The Musical at Birmingham Hippodrome
⭐⭐⭐⭐”A much loved musical”
Directed by Bill Buckhurst music by Alan Menken with lyrics by Glenn Slater, book Cheri and Bill Steinkellner
Set in late 1977/Early 1978 Philadelphia, this musical which is based on the 1990s film, sees Deloris Van Cartier (Landi Oshinowo) sent to a convent after witnessing a murder.

This a fun-filled, melodic version of the hit film but with its own soundtrack which gives it a unique voice. You don’t need to know the film to see this and most of the audience may be there as a guest of someone who loves the show.
Set wise, the set features huge walls which lift and drop to switch scenes from a bar to a street to a police station and the church with swift ease.
Landi Oshinowo’s vocals are excellent and really lift the show, Sue Cleaver is huge amounts of fun as the firm but caring Mother Superior. My favourite song is actually the titular Sister Act which appears in the second half.

The story easily explores the themes of identity, faith, and realising your full potential without ironically getting too preachy about it. Whilst this is aimed at ages 7+ some elements might be considered a bit too adult for some younger people. Audiences loved every second of this show and it is easy to see why it is much loved and sells so well.
A much loved musical Sister Act is at Birmingham Hippodrome until 18th May 2024. Discover what is coming up at Birmingham Hippodrome here: birminghamhippodrome.com/whats-on. And find out more about Sister Act here: sisteractthemusical.co.uk.
