Review: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at Lichfield Garrick
⭐⭐⭐⭐The purest panto in all the land
Directed by Sam Rabone, written by Paul Hendy
One day, Prince Charming (Daniel Breakwell) appears in a kingdom on a visit to find Snow White (Maria Conneely) but her stepmother The Wicked Queen (Lindsay Bennett-Thompson) wants Snow White out of the way and sends Herman Von Badapple (George Akid) and Nurse Nellie (Sam Rabone) to do the deed. As Snow White makes her escape she finds a group of dwarfs in the forest. Will they help save her?
This is a really fun family panto with a warm heart and daft jokes. The ensemble arrives down the steps of the stalls and immediately gets the audience involved with clapping and singing.
Snow White itself, as a story, has a thinner plot so this two hour show (plus interval) has the chance to play games, introduce characters and allow for subplots more than most panto stories.
The stage is bright and colourful and there are several full sets but the show pokes fun at itself several times when it is a painted backdrop.
Sam Rabone is brilliant as the dame and the audience loved his delivery especially when paired with George Akid. George’s character has a deliberately wandering accent which sometimes changes within the scene. Lindsay Bennett-Thompson is deliciously evil whilst Maria Conneely‘s Snow White is quick-witted and much less of a damsel in distress than historically portrayed. The Dwarfs themselves are fun, and well written meaning the actors have plenty of fun audience moments, lead by Dean Whatton who is excellent as Sarge.
I’ve several favourite song moments: The Power of Love duet is great and shows off the vocals of Daniel Breakwell and Maria Conneely! A fantastic Queen tribute, and even time to mash up some Madness songs!
