The Twisted Tale of
Hansel and Gretel at
Birmingham Hippodrome
Directed by Esther Simpson
Yesterday saw the first night of the UK tour of The Twisted Tale of Hansel and Gretel a fun family-friendly story which is at Birmingham Hippodrome until 15th February.
A stepmother plans to send her children off into the woods against their father’s wishes as the family can’t afford to eat, but the children keep finding their way home and that’s the way it is says the narrator. But the characters have other ideas and begin to debate the story they find themselves in.
Part fringe theatre – told with songs and part dark fairytale, the story wants to break your expectations from the start. The narrator played by Nicky Priest and a singing Mockingbird Charles Craggs are already on stage with a half-built set when the audience arrive.
The cast is great with Dad and Stepmother played by Luke Greenwood and Jake Jarvis with Rishard Beckett as Hansel and Jessica Rowe as Gretel and the cast is complete with Vicki Taylor as The Duck.
Created by Open Theatre with MBO and Co-produced by Birmingham Hippodrome this production features actors with differing learning abilities and challenges.
The audience is encouraged to sing and clap along throughout and watch the actors transform the set from one location to another.
At just 70 minutes this show zips along at a fair pace, The Twisted Tale of Hansel and Gretel is at Birmingham Hippodrome until 15th February. Book tickets here: birminghamhippodrome.com/calendar/the-twisted-tale-of-hansel-and-gretel
