Review: We Will Rock You at Wolverhampton Grand
Loud, energetic, and fun!
Music by Queen, book by Ben Elton, directed by Ben Elton.
“It’s a brand-new kinda magic!”
It’s back! Since 2002 the smash-hit musical written by Queen and Ben Elton has been seen by over 16 million theatregoers in 19 countries. Featuring 24 of Queen’s most popular songs; winner of the prestigious Laurence Olivier Audience Award for most popular show. Now, the global phenomenon has been regenerated, and returns to the Midlands at Wolverhampton Grand.
In a dystopian future, Earth has been renamed iPlanet and is now controlled by the Globalsoft Corporation. The sinister Killer Queen has banned all non-computer generated music and everyone must spend their days online downloading computer programmed entertainment. Khashoggi, the Chief of Police, is ordered to crush any rebellion. Meanwhile, Galileo, a young outsider, is desperate to “break free” from this corporate world. In his dreams, he hears rock music from long ago, and is heralded as the star of the prophecy by the Bohemians who have been searching for the lost instruments. To fulfil the prophecy Galileo must evade the clutches of the Killer Queen and finally bring rock music back to the world.
You may think with a show that has been going for 20 years you had seen it all, but in the words of Brian May himself:
This is a stunning state-of-the-art new-look production… but of course, the original story is now more relevant than ever.”
The updates to the show are very clever (and funny) with new jokes added to make it bang up to date – even comments about Covid!
We Will Rock You boasts an incredibly talented and energetic cast who looked they were having fun. A great ensemble supported some fantastic artists in the main roles. Ian McIntosh and Elena Skye were superb as main characters Gallileo and Scaramouche, both had amazing voices. Michael McKell gave a really funny performance as Cliff. For me though the stand out performance was Killer Queen herself Jenny O’Leary – great voice, and grand performance!
The sets, lighting, and effects were spectacular, with a giant video wall projecting settings and CGI footage to create new locations and action. My favourite set pieces were during One Vision and Headlong – bright, colourful, and loud.
This production is the last time the show will tour, so don’t miss out on your final chance to see this classic rock stage musical. Overall this show was utterly amazing. Everyone in the audience had a great time and were stomping along to the hits. By the end, all were on their feet. Loud, energetic, and fun – a real bohemian rhapsody for new and old Queen fans alike!
We Will Rock You is rocking all week at Wolverhampton Grand until 28th May 2022.
The UK Tour currently continues until 10th September 2022. See the touring dates here: queenonline.com/wwry/uk_tour and discover what is coming up at Wolverhampton Grand here: grandtheatre.co.uk/whats-on.
