Via Lauren for Great Western Arcade
March 2023: Great Western Arcade will be celebrating the arrival of the cherry blossoms with a day of celebration of Japanese arts and culture on Saturday 25th March from 11am to 4pm. The day will feature a variety of performances, demonstrations and hands-on activities, showcasing a mix of modern and traditional Japanese arts.
Attendees at the central Birmingham arcade can experience performances from award-winning Japanese singer-songwriter MION (at Noon and 4pm) and local dance troupe IVIX (at 3pm). Tengu Taiko Drummers will also be hosting workshops offering the opportunity for visitors to try their hand at playing the mighty Taiko drums at 11am, 1pm and 3.30pm (Please note spaces are limited to 6 per workshop and are first come, first served).
Japanese master calligrapher Yukiko Ayres will be demonstrating the art of ‘shodo’ throughout the day and will be offering the chance to take home a unique memento by writing your name or special word in Japanese script with brush and ink (£5, cash only). During the day visitors can also watch a demonstration of the gentle art of Japanese silk embroidery, try on a genuine wedding kimono and learn how to fold your own origami crane.
GWA independent’s Kuula Poké, The Vegan Kitchen and Sushi Passion will be on hand to offer a taste of Japan throughout the day with dishes such as Takoyaki (octopus balls), Karaage Chicken, Ramen bowls, Vegan Katsu and Teriyaki treats as well as ever popular Mochi ice cream.
For those wanting to take home something from the day, there will also be a special pop-up market in the Arcade where you can shop for a vintage kimono, Japanese art prints, kawaii goods and have your own manga portrait drawn to take home.
