March 2022: A celebration of Japanese culture is taking place in Birmingham at the end of this month with the launch of the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival in Digbeth. Happening at Red Brick Market on Saturday 26th March the free festival will feature live performances, craft workshops and food and drink from some of the city’s well-loved independents, all inspired by the country of Japan.

There will be live performances throughout the day, including Japanese singer-songwriter MION, IVIX Dance, Tengu Taiko Drummers and thrilling martial arts demonstrations. Festival goers can also try their hand at traditional Japanese crafts such as origami, sashiko embroidery with Japan Crafts and create their own Kokedama plant display with Viridian Orb. There will also be displays and demonstrations of Japanese calligraphy and traditional silk embroidery.

Attendees can pick up a range of items on the day including vintage kimonos from Retro Kimono, vintage matchbox label prints from Grumpy Daruma, J-POP CDs from KPOPPINUK, original kawaii prints from Toslisy, anime apparel and accessories from Broccoli Toys and jewellery and papercrafts from Yumi Arts and Crafts.

Food lovers can enjoy a feast from two of Birmingham’s finest independents Tokyo Izakaya and Ba-Ha Vegan; with Tokyo Izakaya serving delicious sushi and Ba-Ha serving an exclusive menu featuring their signature dishes with a Japanese twist.

Shibuya Underground, the brand new bar from Samuel Boulton (of award-winning The Pineapple Club), will be providing a journey for the taste buds into the ancient world of Sake with a pop-up bar and the opportunity to purchase bottles to take home on the day.

There will also be a charity raffle with a chance to win prizes worth over £1000. All proceeds will go to FareShare food bank and Red Cross Ukraine.

Cherry Blossom Festival has been organised by eight independent businesses based at Red Brick Market who want to present an immersive experience of Japanese culture.

Festival organiser Katie Becker of Japan Crafts says

We are so excited to contribute to the Cherry Blossom Festival. Digbeth is emerging as a cultural hub and events like this help to bring together local businesses as well as world-renowned exponents of Japanese culture”.

Showcasing over 120 local independent traders and artists, Red Brick Market is a treasure trove for those looking for something unique and artisanal for any and all occasions.

The Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival is taking place on Saturday 26th March from 10am to 4pm at Red Brick Market. Entry is free. For more details head to japanfestbrum.co.uk. Follow japanfest_brum on Instagram.
