Technology meets art at new BOM exhibition

BOM (Birmingham Open Media) has announced its summer programme, Make Believe, which will give visitors the chance to see how technology could shape the future of art, and even try their own hand at using machine-based techniques.

Opening at the gallery based on Dudley Street in Southside on Friday 7th June, the interactive space will feature Google Tilt Brush, where guests can create their own 3D paintings using a blank virtual reality canvas. The exhibition will also include an augmented reality constellation of drawings, which will float in the gallery, with visitors being able to add doodles and sketches to the AR installation.

The technology on show is also capable of creating its own art, as scenes from Alice in Wonderland will be recreated as famous paintings through artificial intelligence, highlighting how art and machines meet.

Make Believe will bring together four international artists – Gene Kogan, Violet Forest, Will Pappenheimer and Sofia Crespo – who all use the latest software to create colourful experiences that delight and entertain.

Karen Newman, director at BOM, said:

Our ethos is based around the collision between art, science and technology, and Make Believe highlights the possibilities for all three.”

Julia Robinson, Southside BID Manager, said:

The artistic and cultural offering here in Southside is going from strength to strength. Profiling the amazing venues, artists and street art in the area is a key focus for the BID, and the Make Believe exhibition will be one of many great art showcases in Southside this year.”
