The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical at The Alexandra: Review

⭐⭐⭐⭐”A big, energetic fantasy musical”

Directed by Lizzi Gee, music and lyrics by Rob Rokicki, book by Joe Tracz

After discovering he is half-Greek God and his mother vanishes, Percy Jackson (Vasco Emauz) travels across the USA to Los Angeles with Grover (Cahir O’Neill) and Annabeth (Kayna Montecillo), and he learns all about himself along the way.

This is a fantasy young adult musical which has carved out its own niche with audiences to bring a two-hour musical on tour around the UK. The multi-level static set features lots of areas for the cast climb around during pivitol moments.

The music really pushes the story forward, and Vasco Emauz‘s strong vocals shine throughout. Danny Beard is fun as Mr D, and Cahir O’Neill steals the show as Grover with every moment he is on stage.

I came in knowing nothing about this world and left wanting to play the soundtrack on repeat. Placing the band behind the cast is a real key to this as we don’t struggle to hear the lyrics. Younger audiences will love this comic book-style production, which features some fun moments of on-stage magic.

A big, energetic fantasy musical, The Lightning Thief, is at Birmingham Hippodrome until 28th February 2026.. Book tickets here: birminghamhippodrome.com/calendar/the-lightning-thief.
