The Woman in Black at The Alexandra: Review

⭐⭐⭐⭐”A spooky winter story”

Directed by Robin Herford, written by Stephen Mallatratt

Kipps (John Mackay), has a story to tell and wants to perform it to his close friends. As he doesn’t yet have the skill to perform it, he enlists an unnamed actor (played by Daniel Burke) to help brush up his skills. It is the story of The Woman in Black… which in this case is a story within a story.

The slanted stage, the huge sheets that become transparent at times, the creepy furniture, and a half-lit door are all the props needed to tell this story, which features just two actors and plenty of spooky imagination.

For many people, they will know the film versions or the book, but this is a shared creepy experience, and it is filled with moments of humour, and the Birmingham audience might laugh at random moments. (We do that!)

The soundscape is excellent with spooky noises, and Daniel Burke slips in and out of being “Kipps” with ease, plus John Mackay then gives a great performance as all the other characters encountered by the stage version of Kipps.

Anyone looking for a fun, spooky, and not too serious night out will enjoy this. But it avoids full-on horror. This is a fun production with plenty to enjoy.

A spooky winter story, The Woman in Black, is at The Alexandra until 31st January 2026. Book tickets here: atgtickets.com/shows/the-woman-in-black/the-alexandra-theatre-birmingham.
